Eating Out in Berlin

I know from my own experience that in a city one doesn't know it can be fairly difficult to find a nice place to have lunch or dinner.
So below I have listed a few places where I go regulary and which really are convincing. Nothing fancy, just nice atmosphere, decent food and decent prices and no tourist trapps.

If you want to eat (southern) german food you could try out the Restaurant ‚Engelbecken' which is my very favourite place to go.
It is in the western part of the city a bit away from the tourist attractions and about a twenty minute walk from the Schloß Charlottenburg.
The Engelbecken has a small menu which changes regularly, the food is very good indeed (you must try the Apfelstrudel) and the service is very attentive and friendly. A big bonus here is that they all speak english and even have taken care of an english menu. They do have a website:
A reservation call is strongly recommended.

At Stuttgarter Platz there are 2 really nice places to go, nothing frilly but decent food and nice atmosphere :

The  DOLLINGER is a very relaxed Bar and Restaurant for the neighbourhood and nearby areas, in summer there are a lot of tables outside. Except the standard menu they always have , they offer a spezial daily menu at a good price wich is highly recommendable, especially the fish . There are no white tablecloth in the Dollinger, it is very casual, but that’s nice about it and you can also have only a coffee or a beer there.

More or less opposite of the Dollinger is a very nice indian restaurant, the Taj Mahal, also very casual with good food and extremely nice service. It does have a fairly small menu, it is also more of a neighbourhood restaurant.

In Schöneberg, Grunewaldstrasse is a fantastic greek restaurant, the ‚Ousies’, wich is not serving the usual piles of meat you find at greek restaurants (at least in germany) but they are serving a large variety of small dishes including a lot of nice vegetable ones. A nice atmosphere, and a very attentative and friendly service. With my very own eyes I have seen greek people eating there. The Ousies is opened daily from 5 pm onwards, a  reservation is highly recommended as it is always very full there.

They do have a website featuring the menu:

In the depth of Kreuzberg between Kottbusser Tor and Hermannplatz is the italian Hostaria La Buona Forchetta with good italian food.
There are only a few tables and a very straight forward concept: They offer a 7 course mneu wich changes every month and you can eat either the whole menu or choose only one course and get a fixed price for the food and some wine, water and espresso. I love that concept, it is very italian. For an uncomplicated dinner or with the girls I love going there.

Hostaria La buona forchetta
Graefestraße 83

Very close to the Reichstag is the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (also called pregnant oyster) with the bar ‚AUSTER’ which in summer has a lovely beer garden right next to the water. In the beer garden is self service and you can either have a drink like a coffee or you get yourself a Brezel and a beer. They offer Barbecue at the weekends This is simply the very best place during the day to relax after some straining sightseeing around all the government buildings.
Opened from 10am – 8 pm, at weekends till 9pm.

The address:
John-Foster-Duller Allee 10

In east Berlin:

In Mitte there is to mention the very elegant Vietnamese 'fast food 'restaurant 'Monsieur Vuong' near Hackescher Markt.
It offers 2-3 different meals which change daily and are freshly prepared.
The place is always packed and the distance between the tables is rather small, but 'Monsieur Vuong' is ideal to have a quick lunch or dinner.

Alte Schönhauser Strasse 46
10119 Berlin
